The advantages of apprenticeships are being highlighted by Gloucestershire based network solutions company, Gbics and its most recent employee and apprentice - Alex Hudson.

Gbics specialises in fibre optic products that have been integrated into bespoke networking solutions, and earlier this year was looking to add to the team, in the position of a warehouse operative and eventually an apprentice to join their dedicated sales department.

Alex, 17, said: “I really wasn’t enjoying college, and thought a apprenticeship is a really good solution because I get to work like a full-time job and also learn about the position, potential opportunities, and get a qualification at the end of it.

“Gbics is a relatively small team and small company, and which is perfect for me as I learn more about their industry.”

James Burgess, director of Gbics, said: ““One of the advantages of an apprenticeship is that the individual will develop their relationship within the sector of choice and build a reputation within the working environment, this is what we wanted from Alex and he has delivered.

“Traditionally, apprenticeships have been for those going into a trade, with university the option chosen by students following professional or academic routes.

“Universities are opening their doors to less academic, more vocational courses. Apprenticeships are not just the route into work for tradesmen, you can now do marketing apprenticeships, get into software and computer companies as well as law firms.

“As higher education tuition fees rise, the option of a training route where you actually get paid to learn becomes a real option. Traineeships equip young people who are looking for work with the skills, confidence and vital work experience they need to gain an apprenticeship or other job.

"But at the other end of the apprenticeship spectrum, some apprentices can go on to achieve degree-level qualifications".

Alongside working at Gbics, Alex has regular interaction with his course leader and he also has a work mentor.

He said: “I work side by side with him in the warehouse so he can always make sure I am safe and doing the correct things in the warehouse. It is easier to learn new skills and gain more knowledge with someone working next to you with experience."
